The 3rd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment was first constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as Battery C, 17th Field Artillery and organized on 6 June 1917 at Camp Robinson, Wisconsin. The 17th Field Artillery Regiment as a whole was assigned on 21 September 1917 to the 2nd Division. The unit participated in 6 campaigns of the First World War with the 2nd Division: Aisne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Lorraine 1918, and Ile de France 1918.
