In 1992, following the redeployment from Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the 9th Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment was reflagged as the 603d Aviation Support Battalion, 3rd infantry Division in Ansbach, Germany. In 1996, the Division moved to Fort Stewart (and Hunter Army Airfield), Georgia with the reflagging of the 24th Infantry Division to the 3rd Infantry Division.
Since its activation, the 603rd Aviation Support Battalion supported every major training exercise and deployment involving elements of the 3rd Aviation Brigade. In January 2003, the 603rd ASB deployed with the Division Support Command to support the 3rd Aviation Brigade in its combat roll during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 603rd ASB distinguished itself by providing critical Combat Service Support (CSS) under extreme combat conditions over unforgiving terrain to the Aviation Brigade as the Division attacked into the heart of Baghdad. 603rd ASB received the Presidential Unit Citation for its courage, skill and professionalism in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
